Prof. John Gal, Chair of the Taub Center Welfare Policy Program, participated in a meeting of the Internal Affairs and Environment Knesset committee. The discussion was on the subject of the non-utilization of the state budget by local authorities to narrow social gaps. The meeting was chaired by MK Yaakov Asher with the participation of the Director General of the Federation of Local Authorities in Israel and representatives of the Ministry of Welfare and Social Affairs.
Prof. Gal presented data regarding disparities between strong and weak authorities. There was an interesting discussion among the committee members who felt that, in light of the importance of the subject, a separate meeting should be held to deal with it. Prof. Gal says: “The very fact that there is a discussion on the inequalities in social services is encouraging. They were very interested in the Taub Center study data and the chairman of the committee asked his assistances to gather data on local authorities’ budgets.”
